With the original 4-piece line-up formed in 1992; 4 albums, 1 compilation album, several EP’s, 150 or so gigs later the band are still serving up their unique blend of food-based parodies, the odd straight cover or reworked pop hit. The ‘Sarnies’ as they refer to themselves are based in the Wyre Forest area but have played all over the UK and can boast some impressive support slots including The Beat, Dreadzone, Eat Static, Nik Turner’s Inner City Unit, Bentley Rhythm Ace and Spunge. The emphasis is fun – classic reworkings of ‘pun classics’ The Jam’s ‘Eat some Trifle’, The Sex Pistols ‘ God Save Icecream’ mixed with ‘juke box faves’, Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin in da toasta’ and a bold version of One Direction’s ‘What makes you beautiful’ can now be added to the new classics featured on the latest 2020 EP ‘The Great Sausage Roll Swindle’ which features a heavily dubbed ska-punk version of Kylie’s ‘I can’t get you out of my head’ which has been a crowd favourite and encore song at sarnie gigs over the last 13 years.
The band have courted controversy, particularly in the early years, with their then name ‘Sister Savage & the B*ggered Nuns’ , and were once threatened with court action, the band continued until a timely incident with the then bass player going AWOL prompted the band to change their minds about the band name and so the sandwich was created.
The band have also been immortalised in local ‘Wyre Forest’ folk-lore by featuring in the second volume of ‘Get your Kicks on the A456’, a comprehensive music history of the area and feature alongside the likes of Karl Hyde from Underworld and Robert Plant.
